Selfless Action
Men for Others
Gandhi said: Selfless action is a source of strength. For such action is the worship of God. And Jesus said: Whatsoever you do to these, the least of my brothers and sisters, that you do unto Me. And Edmund Rice said: Were we to know the merit of only going from one street to another to serve a neighbour for the love of God, we should prize it more than gold or silver.
Einstein, Teresa of Calcutta, John Paul II, Helda Camera, Damian of Molokai, Francis of Assisi, Dorothy Day and many more, all spoke of selfless action as a way of encountering the true presence of God in our lives.
At Trinity College, we believe passionately in encouraging every boy in the school to get involved in serving others, particularly those less fortunate than ourselves. Our Christian Service program, is led and organised by Mrs Marya Stewart.
Our 180 Year 11 students have just returned from four days of Christian Service in a variety of placements across the length and breadth of Perth. This program is called Sharing Gifts and the boys have all involved themselves in selfless action and have tested their own limits of generosity and commitment. From all reports, some have done exceptionally well and all have discovered much about themselves as well as learning about the elderly, the disadvantaged and the disabled.
Now they return to school to join the reflection program to make some sense of all that has happened. They have submitted their Journals and next term they will participate an Encounter Retreat where they can share their experiences and reflect on Jesus teachings in the Gospel.
A debt of gratitude is owed to Mrs Marya Stewart for the countless hours she has spent finding placements for all of the boys in Year 11. Her own selfless action has set an example for all of us.
