Trinity College
Dance is becoming a significant part in the culture at Trinity College. The school has two dance groups that represent the college in various festivals, such as the JSHAA Performing Arts Festival and the Catholic Performing Arts Festival. In the past five years, both the primary group BIG (Boys In Groove) and the secondary group GIG (Guys In Groove) have collectively received a total of six shields for the most outstanding creative dance in the Catholic Performing Arts Festival.
BIG and GIG Director Ruth Bott
Dance is alive at Trinity College, and a testament to its interest is the 150 primary students auditioning to be part of BIG in recent years. Dance instils within the boys an aesthetic sense. It provides opportunities for teamwork, skill enhancement, body awareness, improved athleticism, strength of body and character. It fosters self respect and helps them become more creative and courageous human beings. Some of our dancers are now considering careers in the performing arts.
Since beginning the dance programme in 2001, I have seen a wonderful development in the boys’ interpretation of this art form. There has been a growing, positive interest in Trinity College dance from the wider community, and as a result we are developing strong networks with other schools and organisations. Over the past couple of years we have collaborated on dance works with Perth College. This relationship looks to be ongoing.
In Term Four the dance season reaches a close with performances from the boys in the ACHPER Festival, Student Choreographic Afternoon, Senior Speech Night and the Junior Concert/Presentation Evening. Boy, can Trinity dance!
