this seasons results. The club has come a long way in the last couple of years and I m pleased to say that we are on the right track with all teams either matching or exceeding last year s performances.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> I m not big on statistics but I had a look at how many wins we had as a club over the last few years. This meant adding up all the wins in Yr 8/9/10, 2nd XV&nbsp;team and 1st XV. Two years ago, the 2007 season we had 14 wins and were ranked 6th in the PSA. Last year we had a total of 21 wins and this ranked us 4th out of the 7 PSA schools. This year if we add up all the wins from our 5 teams we achieved 26 wins and this placed us 3rd in the PSA.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'>I believe this clearly illustrates how far we have come and this could not be possible without the hard work and commitment of so many people. Firstly the coaches who put in the time to plan and implement the training sessions, then there are the parents who continually support you boys by picking you up from training, taking you to matches and supporting you on the sidelines.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> But the most important ones are the players, they are the ones who have to turn up to training twice a week, they are the ones who have put their body on the line week in, week out and they are the ones who make the commitment to represent Trinity Rugby. A successful conversion would almost always&nbsp;follow by Sam Harris, who kicked a near perfect 83% of his attempts this season. A great example for aspiring kickers of the future. All season our forwards were not intimidated by the physicality of the opposition. Although an extremely small pack, they showed lots of courage and character especially when faced with a Scotch front row weighing 330kg.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'>If I was to have one criticism of our performances this year it was that on occasion we lacked the passion needed to push ourselves that extra inch towards victory. However as I ran on to Ken Sass field for my last time today I was proud of our achievements as the 2009 1st XV. I believe we have given the Trinity teams of the future something to aspire to. His organizing of weekly powerades for the team is just one example and this was greatly appreciated by a lot of the boys. Thankfully though I won t be around next year to do all the labouring for him, but I feel that my brother, Conall, would be a more than adequate replacement. We were on our way to Sydney for a 7 day tour which involved a couple of matches and some training sessions in preparation for the upcoming PSA season.It was a very successful tour with the boys playing some excellent rugby against two very strong Sydney Rugby schools.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'>The boys also had the opportunity to be coached by a former Old Boy Will Brock who is currently part of the Australian Sevens team and was also a member of the last Trinity 1st XV to win the Brother Redmond Cup back in 2002. It was great to hear Will talk about the TC spirit and the desire needed to win the comp. Further inspiration was then received when we had the opportunity to watch the Western Force complete their team run at the Sydney Football Stadium prior to their match against the Waratahs. The boys got to chat and get autographs from the Force boys and I think this was the highlight of the tour for many. I must thank Tony Webb, Ian Hailes and prankster Steve Leahy for all their assistance during the tour and also to the dads who helped out at different times. Thank you very much but I m convinced you had just as much fun as the boys.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> Our first game was against Scotch this game set the scene for the season, some brilliant team and individual play but we weren t able to finish&nbsp;Scotch off and the game which preceded the&nbsp;unveiling&nbsp;and naming of Ken Sass field ended in a 13  13 draw. We would have taken that result prior to the game as Scotch were touted as one of the competition favourites but&nbsp; we knew that this was a major upset that we let slip through our fingers.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'>We won our next two games which placed us second on the ladder and the gutsy win against Wesley really showed the rest of the competition that we were title contenders. The next game against Christ Church was a try fest with the boys racking up 13 tries in our 83 -0 record breaking win. It was great to see both forwards and backs work so well together and all the hard sessions on structure and continuity over in Sydney really seemed to have paid off. Then it was the big one at Hale. Although preparation had gone really well, the Hale boys just had too much firepower for our boys. We dominated the final 20 mins but just couldn t get close enough to earn a bonus point and knew that we in order to win the comp, bonus points were going to play a major role in the outcome.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> Following a disappointing 24  24 draw against Aquinas we then went on to win our next two games which placed&nbsp;us back in second spot behind leaders Hale with 4 tough games remaining.Unfortunately after a run of injuries in the squad we only managed 1 win out these 4 games, although we did manage to score 11 tries which did credit us with 2 bonus points  which was very pleasing as this was a target that we had set during the Term 2/3 break.Our aim for the season was to finish in the top 3 unfortunately we have finished 4th but we have improved on last year with 6 wins/2 draws and 4 losses.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> Trinity also&nbsp;for the first time in 6 years scored more points than we conceded and if we weren t using the new bonus point system we would be 3rd with the fourth team 4 points behind.Overall&nbsp;the boys have performed really well this year and have continued the improvement of 1st team Rugby at Trinity. They have been an excellent group to coach and wish them all the very best for the future. Although this doesn t seem to be an impressive win/loss ratio this has possibly been the best season that the 2nd XV at Trinity has had in many years, with numerous records broken. This year was first time in roughly 6 years that the 2nd XV has managed to win two games in a row. This success truly shows the depth that the Rugby Club is now starting to build at Trinity and will continue into the future. An additional sign of this would have to be the number of players who got called up to play for the 1st XV whether that was as a tactical substitution or as part of the run on team. A sign of how far we have come this season would have to be our last fixture against Hale today. Previously we had lost in to Hale in excess of 50 points, today we matched up and lost only in the second half going down 17-7.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> Our preseason helped immensely in our preparation, starting on the tour to Sydney. This gave all the players of the senior squad a superb opportunity to bond and learn to play as a team rather than a group of individuals. <br> Amongst all of the games that we played this season there are two that stand out. The first one was our match away against Guildford which was only our second fixture in the season. We matched a much bigger opposition team up front which gave us the opportunity to play our expansive style of rugby and we ended up holding on for a narrow victory with the final score at 17-12. The second highlight of our season occurred last week against Wesley. This is the best season for the 2nds in many years and this is due to the commitment of the players to training and their attitude both on and off the pitch. Those who saw the last game could see the determination and tenacity that the players put into the game and they went down to Hale 17-7 (the best result against Hale in many seasons). This is also shown by the number of players who stepped up to play unfamiliar positions due to injuries in the 1st XV. Special mentions go to Corey Williams for stepping into the half- back position and David Brewer for taking on the difficult role of hooker for the second half of the season. Well done!<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> In reviewing the season I was amazed to find that the team had 12 try scorers scoring 17 tries with James Whelan&nbsp;and Declan Shortt&nbsp;scoring three tries a piece, Jack McIver and Sam Jennison scoring two tries each. Other try scorers were Brandon Blake, Mattias Caligaro, Luke Dannolfo, Michael Dawson, Max Fairclough, Daniel Nokes, and Mitchell Penistan. Declan Shortt also converted 7 of these tries and a number of penalties. Our season finished with 3 wins, 1 draw, and 6 losses.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> Many thanks go to the parents who come to the games every weekend and when called upon help out with filling water bottles and running touch for us. We were unlucky to not have secured the win against the competition favorites on both days, narrowly missing out on a win by only 7 points each time, but we certainly gained a taste of the kind of rugby we were more than capable of playing in the future.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> Although we played as a fifteen man team, individual efforts didn t go unnoticed. The pre-season started off well as we were able to build two brilliant A and B squads from dedicated and passionate players who proved themselves time and time again not only when it was easy but when it was tough. Mr. Turner did an excellent job of building up both sides and taught us how to play an exciting and expansive brand of rugby through his positive attitude and great technical expertise.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> The first two games of the season were very shaky and we did not play to&nbsp;the&nbsp;best&nbsp; of our ability as we were too focused on ourselves individually rather than a team effort. This attitude changed when in the third game against Wesley we fired as a team and began to work off each other and we beat them by a very convincing margin.After this win we began to fire up and despite a close loss to Hale we began to gather momentum as a real rugby force in this competition. Through Mr. Turner s guidance we began to believe in ourselves and start to really play to our abilities.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> The most notable match of the season was against Scotch College (the second time round) where our aggression and willingness for the contact shocked the opposition. Throughout that game we never lost our heart and we pushed on until the end. It does need to be mentioned that in games against both these teams that the TC team did dominate periods of the game and with further work on basic techniques and fitness that a win is possible. The team, led by Conor Spence, always played the game in the correct spirit and displayed sportsmanship at all times. Before highlighting the award winners it is important to mention the achievements of Conor Spence, Tim Ronchi and Jared De klerk who achieved state representation. At half time in the contest the score was level and we felt we were seriously in with a chance; however we lacked the ability to finish off promising line breaks and due to a lack in fitness fell away towards the end.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> The next 3 games saw us on a roll and hitting some serious form in the lead up to our second round encounter with Guildford. With wins over the old enemy Aquinas, Christchurch and Scotch, we came into the contest full of confidence in our ability. Our spirit could not be faulted throughout the contest however the sheer size of the opposition wore our smaller side down. We would go on to lose the contest but it was one as a captain I am proud of, as we showed great commitment and the ability to get stuck in.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"; color:#666666'><br> We would end up at the end of the season with a respectable 6 wins and 4 losses. Throughout the fixtures there were a number of notable performers which included Conall Taggart s 3 try effort against Wesley which would contribute to his try scoring tally of&nbsp;8 for the season. The tireless efforts of Angus at the back of the scrum, Jakeb Phoebes debut season which saw some classy finishes out wide and the ever reliable hands of Peter Fitzgerald. The season started with pre-season training the weekend before term started. It was then when I realised we had real talent in our squad. We had many boys who had never played rugby before but they were all keen to listen and learn and it was not long&nbsp;before they&nbsp;started looking like rugby players. The more experienced players were superb at helping teach new skills and pointing out areas to work on. Highlights being, smashing Aquinas on their home turf, beating Scotch convincingly in the 1st and 2nd round. The best games we played though were the four we lost to Hale and Guildford. In the 2nd round against Guildford who we had outplayed&nbsp;them&nbsp;for most of the game but they proved to be just too big to stop for 60 mins. In the 1st round Hale won quite easily scoring 2 quick tries in the last 10 mins. But in the second round we played so much better in tough conditions to narrowly loose.
